I want to use my benchrest for sighting in my AR-15 but the gun won't rest on it because of the magazine underneath. My question is.... Is it safe to load a round in the gun and shoot single rounds without the magazine installed ?

get one of these.....Barricade Buddy: for use as a steady rest on a barricade/door jam in tactical situations and tactical rifle matches, and as a identification safety plate. Installs rigidly with two set screws. ACE will custom silk screen your agencies logo (POLICE, FBI, SWAT etc.) on to the Barricade Buddy for an additional fee - call. Machined from billet Aluminum. Hard anodized

How the heck does that help with sighting in on a bench rest or are you just being silly???

it is a bech rest, more stabile than a bipod and gives you the clearance for 30 rd mags. Even works on AKs ith 20rd mags.

It does not. look at your picture. That thing is only about 3 inches tall. Straight-Shooter wants to use his existing rifle rest and is simply worried about shooting an AR without a magazine.

I figured I'd just insert the magazine and load one round and pull the magazine back out and take my shot. My goal is just to sight the gun in and then freehand from there.

Well, mine is 6" tall, fits on my rail and gives me a total level height of 8 1/2".
This is just another option I found that worked pretty good when I got my SVD and TiGR sighted in and built a long barreled 5.45 RPK. When I got my SSG 82 rifle, it came with a barricade buddy. I know what he wants and they sell 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40rd mags. I have also seen 3rd specialty mags. Now go buy one and argue with me later, ACE isn't the only one to make this thing or the first.

Doesn't your reast adjust in height?? Can you block it up or if its a rigid "Y" type, turn it around and point the base away from the action??

The one I have is a MTM Predator... Kind of a I shape and the center lengthwise support gets in the way of the magazine even if I raise it up. Problem being is I only have four 30 round mags and nothing else. I suppose I could buy a shorty magazine and be fine but I just wanted info on weather or not I could shoot without the mag. I appreciate the feedbacks though on different types of setups and rests because eventually I may invest in something better. So all suggestions are more than welcome on this thread. Thanks "everyone" for your inputs and keep them coming.

I sold my MTM Predator bench rest to a friend and in turn purchased a MTM Site-In-Clean rest. It has a compartment on top where I can remove the lid. This gives me plenty of room for even 30 round magazines with the AR-15. This isn't top notch equipment but for no more than I'll use it since I just use it for sighting in, I'm happy now that the magazine will fit while sighting in.

I was shooting at a Range in Michigan and there you can only shoot ONE round at a time. (ONLY one round in Mag)

I was shooting a Garand, but the guy next to me had what looked to be a 5 round mag that barely stuck outside the mag well. He also had ground or bought a follower that was rounded out so the bolt would stay back after each round and he could drop a round in and use the slide release for the next shot. Pretty neat set up.
