Because they're cool! And I like it to be more of a challenge. I am a plinker, not a precision shooter. If I am only shooting to 300 yards with a 9x or 18x scope, I damn well better be hitting the targets (I can't spell sillohettes?) every time. I like the iron sights but want something new and tacticool.
with iron sights, I was shooting at a 12" steel plate at 330 yards. Had my bipod on, and was resting on a wooden table. While I could probably with practice, hit the target at that range standing up with no supports, it'd be a lot harder to do. Honestly, if it were me and my main goal was to shoot out to 300 yards.. I'd at least get a 4 power scope. A red dot would be nice to have, but I'd rather use that up close.
I was talking with my friend who is in the marines. He just got out of Iraq the beginning of this month. He said he mainly uses his eotech, and his aimpoint. they are issued acogs. He said for any distance, they found that their eotech and aimpoints were pretty useless. He also said for distance there are a LOT better options than the acog as well. If my memory serves me right, he said red dots were most effective 100 yards and closer. But then again, he had to be very very critical of what he used, and what it was used for because it could mean your life. thankfully with target shooting we don't have to worry about that. But he didn't like 1X scopes for any distance, nor did any of his unit.
They make some decent scopes in the 2.5x-6x zoom range. If you aren't wanting precision shooting, but still enough to help out at distance that's what I'd get. I know my scope at 3x is still far enough for you to have to use your skills to get a good hit on a target. But still better than no zoom at all, which for distance I'd rather have some zoom.
