While cleaning/checking a Colt rifle, I came across damage to the bolt carrier. It is chipped on both sides, right in the area of the bolt catch, more-so on the bolt catch side. I am trying to determine what caused this chipping so I can correct it before installing a new BCG.

Some background - I have taken a Colt armorer's course for the rifle and am familiar with the rifle and its parts, but I do not have much practical experience with diagnosing problems/maintaining the rifle. I have no way of knowing if this is a common issue or something out of the ordinary. I searched the forums but could not find anything to give guidance on this issue. I kept this short in case this is a known problem that is easily addressed but, if no one is sure about it, I can go into some more detail about the matter.

Thanks for any help.
