Well guys I picked up my AR today. It's a Colt LE6920. Model number MP6920-FDE I believe. I am in love. I really wasn't going to get one now, but the prices are too good to pass up. I got out the door after Florida's 7% sales tax and $5 BG check for $950 even.

This thing is a beauty. A precise machine. I finally feel prepared for the zombie apocalypse or a civil insurrection. I also have 13 more Pmags coming.

I already took it apart and cleaned it. The bore was very dirty, and the BCG had a bunch of nasty yellow oil-grease. I lubed it according to a diagram I found online.

Now I have a few questions you AR experts can hopefully help me with.

One, is it correct for the bolt to release from the fully locked open position when I simply pull the charging handle to the full rear, and not touch the bolt release (no magazine in)? I sure as hell hope so, I can't remember if it did before I took it apart. Just making sure I didn't FUBAR anything.

Two, I found it pretty hard to get the deep parts of the BCG clean. Is there a special tool or technique I should be using? The same goes for the chamber area. The lugs really obstruct the use of a brush. Tips or tricks?

Three, how heavy should I lube it?

Four, what should I feed this thing? What do you all use for practice ammo? I found some PMC .223 55 Gr FMJ for 34 cents per round to my door.

Five, I know 55 grain isn't exactly optimum for this 1 in 7 twist, but can I expect to get pretty good accuracy out of this? 2 MOA (GUN, not shooter. Think on a vice; inherent accuracy)?

And finally, I couldn't find this anywhere else. My barrel length is listed as 16.1 inches. Does this include the flash hider, or is the flash hider in addition to this?

Thanks guys.

Im going to say that is normal... All Colts I had messed with including my service M16 had wobble
+1
The FNs did too. Of course those had a whole set of other problems...

 Now it just looks like your saying buttsexx to me:shock: :p

Found half a quart of mobil1 full synthetic 10w-30 oil. It is officially my Ar15 lube. Much slicker, yet thicker than the hoppes I was using.

I say buttsexx to everyone. Including nuns. ;)

Slicker, yet thicker is the line I use to get the ladies. They love it. *slaps knee suggestively* Eh!? EHH!?

Jon your innuendo is always welcome. :p

Well now I am reading that this stuff may be too thick to use, and that motor oil is formulated much differently than gun oil is. I don't know enough about oil to tell what is crap and what is true.

Anyone have input?
G
Run it, I bet you're going to be pleasantly surprised.

Of course my NiB BCG will run even if I spit on it, but I prefer Tetra Gun Grease for high heat/pressure applications. ;)
G
Thanks Jon. I'm also reading that motor oil is not a good corrosion preventative because it absorbs oil rather than repels it. Anyone have anything to say about this?

I am trying not to OCD about this lube thing for my AR but don't want to use something that isn't good for it. Even though I know this is a military grade battle rifle, I am still concerned.
G
Hmm, if you clean your AR and oil it with a CLP-style oil, it should be just fine. I don't believe that motor oil is more hygroscopic than any other lubricant out there, though.

MOISTURE -- The Second Most Destructive Lubricant Contaminate, and Its Effects on Bearing Life

Feel free to read through that. For the short period of time the oil's going to be run on the BCG, I don't believe there's much cause for concern. However, if you're not comfortable running with M1 on your BCG, don't do it. No one's going to hold it against you, and if they do, ignore them. It's your rifle and if you want to err on the side of caution, do so.

I clean with hoppes 9 and remoil, and use hoppes elite oil for wiping down and lubrication on all of my guns. I was initially using the hoppes elite for the Colt BCG, but after I lubed it up, cycled it a few times, and let it sit for a few days, it was almost dry! Go figure. I thought I needed something a little thicker, at least for the BCG.

I really think we all over blow the whole oil thing. I have never had any rust that would not wipe off with hoppes on any of my guns, even my dads and grandfathers guns while hunting and shooting as a kid. My grandfather NEVER cleans his guns, yet they don't rust. This is in dry West Texas, but still.

I think the mobil 1 will be fine for the BCG. It's chrome lined anyway, right? I'm not worried about that rusting.

Now, what's the scoop on segmented cleaning rods. Are they really that bad for the bore and crown?
G
One piece carbon fiber. Will not in any shape or form hurt the barrel. Damn near impossible for particles to embed themselves in the rod and drag through the barrel. Tough and very flexible. Buy once cry once.

FWIW I've used an aluminum segmented rod in my pistols... But never my rifles. It wasn't all that expensive to upgrade either. Somewhere near $30 or $40 for a Tipton rod

I'll check them out, thanks.

Dewey rods are nice as well.

Agreed on the Tipton rods! I've had one for my AR for 2 yrs and it's been great. only cost about $30 on Amazon. Get a set of brass jags from Tipton too, they do a GREAT job of holding patches, by far the best way I've seen!

I OCD of most things. As far as oil, it's just not that big of a deal. When you are running your gun and it's hot, you will see the M1 stays longer. At the end of the day, it just doesn't matter. By good equipment, keep it maintained, you will never have a problem.
