I want to get one of the mid west rails I have a stag model 3 so it has the gas block with the rail on top, its lower than the hand guard, I was just wondering how much clearance is there between the barrel and handguard? with it clear that gas block or do I need a low profile one? it sticks up about 5/8 on the top side and 1/2 on the bottom, I can knock the pin out to take the ring for the sling off the bottom of that block.

this is what it looks like now, I was deciding if I want to get the carbine or the 10 inch FF one, if I need to spend the extra money on the gas block ill probably just get the standard one, the rail and a new gas block will cost close to 300 bucks, thats a little more than I want to spend.

contact MI and check with them to see if that gb will fit.
the 10" will look alot cleaner :D

I'm building an upper right now with a lightweight 16" barrel low profile gas block and will be putting a 10" Troy rail on it.

You will definitely need a low profile gas block to replace the existing railed gas block. It won't fit under the MI rail. I just (literally) bought the very same Stag upper that you have pictured. I ended up with the same setup you mention too......MI 10" free float. Rainier Arms substituted the low-profile gas block and installed it for me. It's great, you won't be disappointed.

what did you pay for your 3H upper? and where did you find a good deal on the MI stuff, so far the best price I found is AIMsurplus its 259 with a YHM low profile block and free shipping.

Or you could lurk on arfcom and pick up a slightly used rail.

I got my Troy 10" FF for like $210 shipped.

I think I dinged it up more then it was when it arrived.

3H Upper minus BCG - $385

Stag low-profile gas block - $40

MI 10" rail - $213

All from John @ Rainier Arms....which I highly recommend. Great service all around.

Here's my ArmaLite 16" with a MI 10" ff rail. I picked it up used but uninstalled for $165. I used a Larue low-profile gas block, also used but unfired, $50. You can save a good amount.
