How about the Hi-Standard ARs?

Gander Mtn. is carrying these and they look fantastic. Rumor is that Hi-Standard hired two Colt smiths away to build their own ARs in their Houston plant.

I held their M4 version and looked it all over. The fit, finish and machining was first rate. As good or better than any Bushmaster or DPMS rifle I have ever seen. Alot cheaper than the S&W ARs for sure.

Anybody shot the Hi-Standards yet? For about 700 bucks, it looked like a very good deal.

Since when did the Gander in Houston offer good deals?

My last two trips, I have left the place stunned at their un-abashed high prices. They wanted $36 for an XD9 mag, and $90 for 250 rounds of 45ACP ball. That is ~$9 more than competitors for the mag, and ~$23 more for the ammo.

The one in Terre Haute has had them since they opened. Granted, they're behind the pistol counter, so you can't handle them like the other long guns.

The S&W15 is made by CMT, the same parts as STAG. IMO the S&W label is not worth the extra money.
They are made by STAG under contract from Smith & Wesson using CMT forged recievers.

Many people I have talked to consider Colt the best, with STAG being second, and all other companies somewhere under that. I really don't know about all of that.

I purchased my S&W M&P15A because of how it came equiped and because of the fit and finish. To me, the rifle just has a feel of quality about it. It shoots great!

As far as being worth the money: I have seen people do a cost analysis of building an S&W M&P15T versus just purchasing one. Building the same gun actually costs a couple hundred more over just purchasing the completed weapon. Also, when you purchase the S&W, you are getting Smith & Wesson's warranty with it.

Yeah, I was shocked too. There were 2 Hi-Standard M4s at Gander...not behind the counter, but out there with the boltguns, where I could handle it without being bothered by sales slime.

I was pretty impressed with the build quality and it was around 699 bucks for their M4 varaint. Not bad, if you ask me. It had a nice fit and finish and they had target/varmint versions and a 20" M-16 look alike as well.

Since Hi-Standard is located fairly close to my house, I called their main office and talke to the guys and got the low-down on their ARs. They seem like a hell of a deal and if I bought one and it was a POS, I'd just go down the street and take it ot them in person.

For 699 bucks, hell, I might be tempted to join the AR crowd!

I am surprised to hear "good deal" at Gander; the two usually don't go hand in hand. While most other places don't sell guns for MSRP, with Gander its MSRP + premium. One time I saw a used Colt AWB model AR there, they are asking $1,199 for it. What a joke.

On the S&W MP15. I would recommend RRA or Stag instead; essentially the same thing with only different roll mark. Or if you really have extra cash to spend, buy a LMT.

Ours are out with all the other long guns...free to be handled.

I got my High standard about 2 months ago, and i have no complant. Its a great gun. I would put it up against any DPMS or Oly any day, and imo it would come out on top ;) . But really, its a great gun, and for the price, i dont knowif you can beat it
