SHTF Rifle... Ar or AK?

Oh jeeez. You DIDN'T just start this thread! It has only come up a time or five here, but over at a few other forums it seems like a weekly thing. They all end up the same way (just like the XD v. Glock threads): Both have advantages and disadvantages and it's all preference. My take on it is as follows: If given ONLY the choice of an AR-15 or AK, I'd go w/ the AK simply for reliability issues. If I had a choice though, I'd go w/ an AR with an AK-style gas system because I prefer the ergonomics / design of the M-series / ar-15 rifles. They suit me much better.

considering I have an AR, I'll have to go with that. I wouldn't mind an AK for this purpose however. When it comes down to it though for me, it will be my 11-87 witih my mag extension filled with buckshot, side saddle loaded with buckshot, and the buttstock holder filled with buckshot. I have a bandolier that I can fill with slugs too.

Then I will have my AR and my XD. And if I don't get the chance to give it back to my dad, I'll have his 300 win mag to use too lol. shtf situation, I want as much firepower as I can have.. I'll invite friends over to help man the guns.

AK over the AR-15 Reliability and Punch.

AR-10 over the AK Accuracy and long range killing power.

AR for accuracy.

against human targets, the AR with the right rounds can still be really effective. One major complaint from my friend who just got out of iraq, is that they have to use ball ammo. If they could use stuff meant to blow apart when it enters a body, it would be a lot deadlier. He said some sort of varmint round that's a little heavier than the typical 45 gr would be great.. but they can't use that stuff.

But then again, look at the .223, 5.56 useage lately. It is mostly against people hopped up on adrenaline shots so it's no wonder it doesn't stop them. I think it's more effective than people give it credit.

I keep them all loaded, theres so many people in American now I think unless your in the midwest you better off bunkering down.

What's so special about the midwest? We've got massive populations of idiots here too, you know?

When SHTF, you are going to want firarms that you can always find ammo for. That's why I like 9mm, .45, .223, and .308.
That being said, I like ARs.

+1 ..... from what I have heard people are having a tough time getting ammo for the AKs due to the war....

I, for one, choose "Search Function" to find the other 10,000 threads about this

I love my AR. But if I had to count on something going bang, I'd want the AK, in case I dropped it in the mud or something. Buy both.

I choose my AR, I will take accuracy over spray and pray anyday. Plus you can carry more AR ammo than AK ammo based on weight.
