What is the purpose of tracer ammo?

And what would the military benefit be? Training?

to adjust your aim when firing from a machine gun.... especially on the move it helps show where POI is.

Absolutely is a combat munition. Also allows for adjusting on target at night as well as POI indication primarily at night.

Tracers are also essential for old-school anti-aircraft guns that require the use of iron sights.

I don't recommend firing tracers in hot dry weather, they start fires.
I think Smokey bear would be angry with you.

and sometimes they are used to let you know you're about to run dry on ammo
