With all the talk of Colt and LMT, there are a few things I recommend you do to your AR to bring it "up to par" so to speak. I personally don't own a Colt or LMT, but find these upgrades very necessary for reliability in a SHTF rifle.

1. Properly stake the gas key, and castle nut.
2. Upgrade to a "H" buffer in your stock.
3. Upgrade the extractor to some type of "o-ring" system.
4. Make sure your bolt/BCG is MP tested, & shot peened for strength.
5. Run her wet(no perverted comments). ;)

An alternative to staking the castle nut for the stock is to use a second nut in series with it as a locknut. I have seen one company (SIG) use a liquid type thread locker on the buffer tube threads but I would not recommend it.

A couple more newbie questions, if you don't mind.

What does it mean to have something "staked" or "shot peened?"

Also, what do you mean by "run her wet?"

Comere son, I think we need to have a little talk...ahahahahaha

Use plenty of oil

Staked means using a punch or something to mar the metal over the hold down screws so they cannot back out or loosen up.

"Running Her Wet" refers to properly lubricating your AR. As a result of what I like to call "NCO Bull****", there has circulated a myth, both within the military and outside of it, that the AR system runs best dry, because "lubrication attracts dirt and fouling".

In reality, the AR-system runs best wet, internally, because lubrication actually lifts dirt and fouling from close clearance surfaces and allows it to be pushed into higher clearance areas of the weapon.

Otherwise, Nikon777 has the right idea of what "upgrades" that are necessary on your non-Colt AR in order to have all sorts of black rifle goodness.
