Really, a lower is a lower is a lower. As stated many times here there's no real difference unless you go for the top end manufacturers that add extra features, throw in some styling changes and put a $2-300+ price tag on them. Go for a good standard lower and spend your money on the barrel.

One area to check for on some lowers is the magazine well. I have run into some lowers where the well is a little tight when using polymer mags such as P-Mags. 99.5% of the time, a quick sanding with 1000 to 2000 grit corcus (?) cloth solves the problem. If you're using aluminum mags, you're okay.

I receive emails from AIM Surplus regularly showing various lowers all under $100, some around $50-60. Check around as it's a buyer's market now that the panic buying is over and these companies are trying to unload their excess stock. One of the pawn shops around here has lowers they can't sell as they're priced over $125 for no-name manufacturers. Guess the fact that prices have dropped escapes them or they overpayed for them.

What makes a good lower . The magwell broach . I have a couple of LAR's that mags don't drop free from. Some people in the NFA community worry about DIAS friendly shelf height. You also need to decide what logo looks the best to you. HEH,

Any comments on the Lanco Tactical lower? Anyone have any experience with them? Knowledgeable guys with a local shop in PA, wondering if their house brand lower is up to snuff.

All a lower does is hold your trigger and stock in place. I just built 2 guns on anderson lowers. Real nice. Shoots as good as my rock rivers

although this is an old thread I must say I agree with this comment. I have built several AR 15's and my only complaint about any of the lowers that I have used which is several spikes, Armalite, colt, BCI defense, ect. no matter whether high end or low end I always look for a beveled edge in the mag well for quicker and more precise transition to a new magazine. also helps decrease chances of scratches from metal magazine

I have built many AR platform rifles and used Bushmaster,Rock River,Spikes,BCI lowers and I can't tell much difference. They all perform as they should.
I will say I bought an ATI polymer lower complete and have 8000 + rounds on it and it has been very solid. No drifting pins or take down pin problems its as tight as it was when it was new.
No buffer issues no cracking at high stress areas either.
For the money A good polymer lower is nothing to sneeze at as far as reliability.
I would rate ATI as the best polymer lower out there.
I did build one on a New Frontier polymer lower and it needed some fitting and cleaning up of the take down pin holes and in the mag well before I could use it.
I would not recommend New Frontier at all.

They're lowers, not really a huge difference between them as long as they're manufactured to spec. Plus most lowers are made by only a few companies, and are contracted to brand them. (Kind of how store brand soups are usually canned by campbell, just a different label slapped on).

In Bold, there is only a few companies that actually make lowers, and then they just stamp them for whoever takes the contract.

But my experience from what I own, and have seen.
My BCM lower is great, my S&W lower is great, my PSA lower is good.
I have a friend with a RRA, the lower seemed fine, and I have handled colts AR-15s and those are great.

I mean all they really do is hold your trigger, pins, buffer tube. I would never buy a plastic lower however.

This is good information since I am considering an AR build or two in the future. I am considering a rifle and a pistol build.

There is not a ton of difference from a functional standpoint between AR lowers. As mentioned by others, they hold pins, springs, triggers, etc. Of all the lowers I have owned, some have had better finishes than others. However they all functioned the same.

At this point, I am very partial Mega Machine lowers. Very durable and nice finish and nice fit. The nylon upper receiver tension screw is a nice touch as well.

Plus, if you are assembling an AR from scratch, why not have your upper and lower match?

Mega makes great stuff!!

BCI 1st lower recivers are my favorite for 1 reason . They're very unique , but not Colt , DD , billet quality etc .. and heres why . 2 holes for the Type 7 SoT2 guys from being a m16 lower . No jive , milling or headaches . 720-750 rpm with colt m4 upper . Buy them while you can .
