XM177 Type Rifles

I was just curious about building an XM177-esque rifle that is as close to Vietnam Era specs as possible. Did they use normal A1 Upper Receivers? I have seen that Bushmaster is selling a stripped A1 Upper Receiver, but I was curious when they added the "Shell Deflector" to the uppers and if something like would be historically accurate.
